DYS Celebrates National Mentoring Month

In This Section

The City of Birmingham Mayor’s Office Division of Youth Services (DYS) celebrates National Mentoring Month by encouraging others to get involved with mentoring. Did you know that young people who are in a quality mentoring relationship are more likely to do better in school and have positive aspirations about their future? Those young people are also more equipped to make responsible decisions and model good behavior too.

Elevate YOUth is DYS’ direct serve mentoring program for young boys and girls ages 8 – 17 years old. Participants take part in gender and age-specific sessions that cover topics relevant to the issues they face today. The program is designed to provide and equip Birmingham’s youth with 21st-century skills and to inspire them to become the leaders of tomorrow. Register today for Elevate YOUth upcoming virtual sessions here:  Elevate Youth Application (google.com) DYS will also highlight some local mentoring organizations making a difference in the lives of Birmingham Youth on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

The City of Birmingham is also a member of the National CARES Mentoring Movement. The national organization is a pioneering community-galvanizing movement dedicated to alleviating intergenerational poverty among African Americans. It offers Black children in low-income families and unstable communities the social, emotional, and academic supports they need to unleash their potential and graduate from high school prepared to succeed in college or vocational-training. The National Mentor Organization also provides valuable resources to engage the community and learn more about how to be a mentor. You can join the national celebration all month long.
