DYS Re-Launches Mentoring Initiative with New Name
The City of Birmingham Mayor’s Office Division of Youth Services (DYS) is re-launching our mentoring initiative with a new name but still great programs and services. Elevate YOUth aims to help young people excel to the next level of professional, personal, and character development. Exploring the positive impact mentoring can have on a child’s life, this initiative has two components including: Birmingham CARES and Birmingham Elevates. Each element connects young people in Birmingham communities to mentoring opportunities to cultivate optimism for their futures.
- Birmingham CARES maintains a collaborative network of mentoring organizations to connect families with available opportunities in the City of Birmingham.
- Elevate YOUth’s direct serve component, Birmingham Elevates focuses on topics relevant to the issues youth face today. This component serves boys and girls ages 8 – 17 years old. The program is designed to provide and equip Birmingham’s youth with the necessary tools to become the leaders of tomorrow.
The program’s curriculum includes bi-monthly group mentoring sessions and activities. The topics are centered around 21st century skills training including but not limited to:
- Critical Thinking
- Information gathering
- Character Building
